A Love Story

My husband, Tom, and I met on New Year's Eve. To many of you, this might sound romantic... like a true love story in the making. While it is a love story, our love story, the night we met was... well, not quite romantic. Let me explain...

Rewind to 2007. My best friend lived with Tom's sister. Though I've met and known his sister for years, I've never met Tom. New Year's eve was around the corner and I convinced her to have a party at their apartment. 

The night of the party arrived and I went with 2 of my friends. I just wanted to enjoy the night with my girls and ring in the New Year. Tom arrived and immediately stared me down. I even said to one of my friends "why is that weird guy staring at me?" He spent the next 2 hours asking everyone at the party about me. I literally watched him do this. The party was not very big, and I watched as he talked to every single one of my friends and asked them what I liked to do, what kind of guys I liked, and what my favorite things were. In retrospect, this was hilarious, like I was watching a movie of myself unfold.

Finally he gathered up the courage to come talk to me. The conversation went as follows.

Tom: Hi, I'm Tom. You're Yi-chia? Hi.

Me: stares blankly

Tom: So, um.. I hear you like to shop... I love shopping.

Me: stares blankly

Tom: I love to cook. I hear you really like food. Me too, I can cook anything.

Me: Oh, cool.

Tom: What's your favorite tv show, oh I hear you like Grey's Anatomy, me too. What a coincidence!

Me: stares blankly

Tom: You know what is all the rage. Wiis! I hear they are fun. I could get you one, do you want one?

Me: Sure?

Tom: Um, can I have your number? You know um, just in case. I can cook for you while you watch Grey's Anatomy.

Me: Um... I guess so.

Side note: I just want to point out that he obviously got all this information on me from talking to my friends. And I also want to point out... he actually does not like to cook, he hates Grey's Anatomy, his idea of shopping is spending the day at Bass Pro Shops, and he never got me a wii. Ha!

A part of me agreed to give him my number so that he would stop talking to me. Another part of me thought it was so funny how hard he worked to impress me. I love a man who can make me laugh. And another part of me agreed because I knew his sister and figured, well at least he's not a psycho. Ladies, that's always an important thing to know before handing out your number.

The next day, New Year's Day, he called. Yes, he called me the next day. He asked me out to dinner and I agreed. The rest is history. We have been married for a year and a half and I couldn't be happier.  Happy the-day-we-met anniversary to my husband, who has been making me laugh since 2007!
